Tokyo VIP: How to book nightclub tables and bottle service

The ultimate guide to VIP tables in Tokyo.

It is no secret that Tokyo has some of the world’s most amazing nightclubs. From all around the world, foreigners travel to Tokyo to experience not only Japan’s amazing cultural sights but Tokyo’s version of nightlife. However, despite the popularity of Tokyo’s nightclubs, very few travelers book VIP tables. And that is a shame because the benefits of booking a table are numerous.

  • Skip the lines
  • Better service
  • Top shelf alcohol
  • Avoid the crowded bars
  • Fantastic views of the DJ

Some of the best nights out I’ve had in Tokyo, have been the nights where I was surrounded by a group of friends, enjoying a bottle of goose, raging around our table to the sounds of Yellow Claw at ageHa.

Tokyo VIP plans

In my opinion, I feel that foreigners don’t book tables because of the complexity of the bottle service systems. In the United States, nightclubs will either charge a minimum bottle order (for example, 1,000 USD, and the guest can then choose what bottles within that amount or more to order) or a bottle set including mixers and a few bottles for an x amount of people.

Tokyo’s nightclubs are completely different.

Many of the owners of Japanese nightclubs own or have owned hostess clubs. For those who don’t know, a hostess club is a fancy bar where the girls wear elegant dresses, and Japanese businessman will pay to sit and drink with them. These hostess bars typically have confusing hourly charges, with service fees on top. Because of this, hostess clubs are incredibly profitable if not a wee bit shady.

Your typical hostess girls.

These nightclub owners have copied those systems and applied them to their nightclub VIP tables. After the hostess club closes, it is quite common for the hostesses to bring their customers to nightclubs. So as you can see, the hostess and nightclub business is closely tied together.

Consequently for the average nightclubber, booking a VIP table at a popular nightclub can appear to be overly complicated. And in many ways, Tokyo VIP tables are designed to be vague and confusing. When a VIP customer is enjoying the party, he doesn’t have time to calculate how expensive the VIP table is becoming.

In this article, I will attempt to break down the pricing for VIP tables at all of the Tokyo’s most popular nightclubs. I’ll also include links to our friends at Envyme.jp who provide simple, no-nonsense VIP table packages for some of Tokyo’s best nightclubs.

Before we dive into this guide, here is a description of common pricing terms found in most VIP plans.

Seat Charge:
A seat charge is a set price for a fixed amount of hours for each customer who joins the VIP table. Fees could range from 2,000 yen to 5,000 yen for typically 2 hours. After those two hours are up, an additional charge is added for each extra hour a customer stays at the table.

Keep an eye on this price because if any additional guests join your table, the nightclub will hit you with an added seat charge. Therefore it is especially important to be aware of these charges because the fellas typically enjoy bringing ladies from the dance floor to their table. Some clubs will even offer to bring girls to your table, which is technically illegal to charge for, but it is still practiced in some clubs.

A few nightclubs will waive the seat charge for women.

Bottle Minimum
A bottle minimum typically means a table must order bottles for a set amount of money. For example, a minimum of 30,000 yen could mean two bottles of Moet Champagne or one set of Grey Goose Vodka with mixers.

Service Charge:
This charge is added to the end of the final bill, usually pre-tax, and it varies significantly between nightclubs. Service charges could be as low as 10% or as high as 35%! In some cases, the tax is included in this fee. Be sure to ask the nightclub staff before booking a table, as this percentage is often hidden in fine print.

Tax:
Japanese consumption tax is currently set at 8% and added to the end of all VIP table bills. Some nightclubs will combine this with the service charge.

Door Fee:
Most nightclubs will waive the door fee for guests booking a VIP table. But in the case a VIP table has additional guests coming to the venue, some nightclubs will charge the full door price (not to mention seat charge) for that single guest. This price can get as high as 4,000 yen.

In the past, Shibuya didn’t offer top-tier VIP tables, but in the recent years, this has changed. VIP table prices in Shibuya are usually cheaper then Roppongi.

The nightclub has VIP tables on both the main floor and 2nd floor, with private VIP rooms with private bars available to large groups. The tables here don’t come cheap, so if you are on a budget, I suggest a table on the 2nd floor overlooking the main floor.
